Leak Detectors

This Vacuum Technology & Coating magazine product showcase roundup includes representative leak detectors from leading manufacturers that are used in a wide variety of vacuum-related process applications.

Compiled by Terrence Thompson, Contributing Editor

Absolutely airtight vacuum process equipment is virtually impossible. The pragmatic goal is making certain that the leak rate, no matter how small, is comparatively minor and that it does not hinder the required working pressure, neither on the confined gas contents nor in the receptacle final pressure. The airtightness condition of the equipment must be the minimum necessary required by the established working pressure. The leak rate is the amount of gas that flows into a vacuum system.

Vacuum technology expert John F. O’Hanlon comments, “At some time we will be confronted with a system that does not behave normally—behavior that could be the result of a component malfunction, initial outgassing, or leak. On another occasion we may have to qualify a new system. When and how to hunt for leaks are two useful leak hunting skills.”1

“The decision to search for leaks is as important as the method chosen for their detection,” adds O’Hanlon. Each new component or subassembly should be routinely leak-tested after welding or brazing. However, it is premature to leak-test a new system a few hours after placing it in operation, because its performance does not meet the user's expectations. New systems often pump slowly, because of outgassing from fixtures, seals, and fresh pump fluids. The patient operator will usually wait a few days before criticizing the base pressure.”

Choosing The Right Leak Detector For The Application

The leak detectors described here all have applications in appropriate markets. Prices vary, of course, since the intended application determines the configuration and features required and the cost to manufacture it as well as the selling price. Selecting a leak detector is certainly more challenging than some might think.

Leak detectors are widely used including verifying implantable medical device integrity to make certain that implants are protected from bodily fluids while protecting patients from possible contamination from leaking batteries and other materials. The automobile industry uses helium leak detection for items such as air bag initiators, radiators and air conditioning units. The semiconductor industry uses many leak detectors for wafer fabrication process equipment.

Visit virtually any leak detector leak manufacturer’s website and you will find additional information to peruse instantly, download or have sent to you if you prefer hard copy references. It’s well worth registering at the sites since some of the product and vacuum technology information that is mailed to you will be worth keeping in a prominent place on your bookshelf for years.

EXTRIMA® Hydrogen Leak Detector For Hazardous Environments

The Adixen Sensistor from Alcatel Vacuum Products, Inc. is an intrinsically safe leak detector. The equipment meets the ATEX directive for leak testing in explosive environments, such as aircraft fuel systems. The Extrima® is intended for leak detection with diluted hydrogen as trace gas in explosive environments, where the safety requirements are extremely high. The detector is intrinsically safe which means that it under no circumstances can ignite the explosive gas. Extrima has the European EEx ia IIC T4 classification equivalent to US Class 1, Div 1, groups A, B, C, D, which means that it meets the requirements for use in zone 0 according to the ATEX directive (ATmosphere EXplosible) of the Eur o p e a n Commission. This detector can therefore be applied in the chemical and petrochemical industry as well as in the aviation and oil processing industries. A typical application is leak detection during maintenance of aircraft fuel systems. Since there is always some fuel left in the system, the equipment must meet specific requirements. Extrima quickly detects and locates the smallest possible fluid fuel leaks thereby ensuring 100% integrity of the test object. The Extrima has a unique Auto-Ranging function, which automatically tunes the instrument’s sensitivity for precise leak location. After a leak is located and the search for additional leaks continues, the sensitivity automatically readjusts to the highest level. With seven hours of continuous operation from rechargeable batteries and an IP67 waterproof rating, the Extrima meets all the requirements of the aviation, chemical, petrochemical and oil process industries for leak detection.  www.adixen-usa.com

ASM 1002 Leak Detector for Production Environments

The Adixen ASM 1002 from Alcatel Vacuum Products, Inc. is an appropriate standard leak detector for testing leaks in small components within a mass production environment. It delivers high performance for either sealed or open packages. First is the Sealed Packages Leak Test software program. The ASM 1002 achieves 1 x 10-9 mbar.l/s, leak testing sealed packages in less than 4 seconds (single or batch testing), which makes it the fastest unit of its category on the market. This unit is fully automated. As soon as the test chamber is closed, the cycle starts automatically. The powerful pumping package evacuates the test chamber and allows the unit to perform the leak tests fast and accurately. At the end of the test, the ASM 1002 will display a Pass/Fail (Green/Red indicators) response to the operator. For a good part, the test chamber will vent back to atmosphere and will open automatically, optimizing the operator time. For a leaking part, the Red (Fail) indicator will go off. The test chamber will remain under vacuum requesting the operator intervention to vent it back to atmosphere via a push button. This removes any interpretation out of the operator and guarantees the capture of all leaking parts. Secondly is the Open Packages Leak Test software program. This software will keep the unit in test mode as long as needed to allow the operator to perform the leak test. The operator will trigger the end of the test. The test chamber is easily removed and any fixture can then be installed to facilitate the leak test of any size hybrid circuits.  www.adixen-usa.com

 Calibrated Gas Leaks

VIC calibrated gas leaks are traceable to National Institute of Standards Technology (NIST). Calibrated gas leaks are used to provide a controlled delivery of gases at a relatively low flow rate for applications including: calibration of leak detectors, including helium and halogen sniffers; calibration of residual gas analyzers; calibration of analytical mass spectrometers; provides pressure rise at predictable rates; gas blending; and simulated leaks. The OM Series leaks utilize a precision tapered glass capillary as the leak element. Gases pass through a single orifice, with the leak rate dependent upon size and gas pressure. To prevent clogging of the fine orifice, a unique particle trap is located between the capillary tube and outlet fitting. The PM Series leaks utilize a durable 7740 Pyrex glass permeation leak element which permits diffusion of helium gas. Helium diffuses through the glass membrane at a constant rate determined by the membrane thickness and surface area. These leaks are highly resistant to clogging by nature of their design. The EMOT Series leaks are specifically designed for atmospheric sniffing applications. The leak standard features a metal orifice with zero dead space volume between leak element and outlet fitting. This allows for direct reading of leak rates in atmospheric conditions. Leaks are available in helium, SF6, and most refrigerant gases. The SC Series leaks are calibrated to a master standard traceable to NIST in a temperature and humidity controlled room. Calibrations are fully compliant with Mil Spec 45662/45662A and all applicable industrial standards. SC leaks are supplied with a certificate of calibration; these leaks are used for the Advanced Leak Metrology division's high-speed production leak detectors and older Veeco models.  www.vaccuminst.com

MS-50 Series Console High Speed Production Leak Detection

The VIC MS-50 series of console high-speed production leak detectors have accuracy, reliability and ease of use, with onebutton power-up and fastest time-to-test. Available in a variety of ergonomically designed CE-compliant models and configurations, the MS-50 is used for a broad range of application-specific testing. Because it has a choice of three flow modes, the MS-50 adapts to many leak testing applications. Reverse flow has the fastest time to test for large to fine leaks. Direct flow provides the fastest response time for the smallest of leaks. A combination mode that enables the system tow switch dynamically between modes provides optimum performance. This unique flexibility of flow modes allows the MS-50 to test for leaks in many applications for industries that require any level of leak tightness. MS-50 series also available in dual port, high sensitivity, dry and argon configurations.

New VS Series Helium Mass Spectrometer Leak Detectors Provide Advanced System Intelligence at the Push of a Button

Varian’s VS Series leak detectors combine the simplicity of two-button operation with advanced system intelligence. Start and Vent push buttons permit extremely simple day-to-day operation. Running very user-friendly software, VS Series instruments provide intuitive navigation, allowing easy access to vast system capabilities. Programmable test sequences simplify daily operation, minimize operator error, and maximize production efficiency. The TFT style touch screen display is high definition and high brightness with wide viewing angles. An operator can select from a wide range of languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Korean, Japanese and Chinese) and units of measure for worldwide usage. VS Series Leak Detectors employ Varian’s primary (rotary vane or dry scroll) and high vacuum pumps which deliver high inlet pumping speed and high inlet pressure tolerance to minimize test cycle time, thereby maximizing production throughput. The stateof-the-art spectrometer and vacuum system design provides powerful capability, enabling a broad range of test methods for specific applications. The high efficiency ion source and beam optics optimize sensitivity and mass separation, giving the VS Series very high sensitivity to meet the most stringent leak test requirements. However, the units also enjoy high test port pressure tolerance which permits detection of large leaks. In addition, high helium pumping speed ensures fast system response and cleanup times.  www.varianinc.com

 VS Wireless Remote

Leaks in large systems often occur far from the leak detector. Wired remote controls have sought to address this problem, but impedance and the cumbersome nature of long cables are often limiting factors. For many applications these traditional wired remotes provide little benefit. Varian is introducing the its wireless remote control for a helium mass spectrometer leak detector. By utilizing modern wireless technology, leak testing hard-to-reach locations is now much easier, and can be performed at much greater distances of up to 100 meters. Applications in large systems in which two technicians were previously required can now be performed by one technician, thereby reducing labor costs. All the major functions of the leak detector are now at your fingertips, providing a truly portable leak detection solution. In addition to the visual bar graph of the leak rate, the remote control has a speaker with a variable tone indicating the trend and relative size of the leak. The wireless remote can operate for a full 8-hour shift, or longer, on four AA batteries and conforms to ISM band, 2.4 GHz FHSS standards.  www.varianinc.com

 PHD-4 Portable Helium Detector

The Varian PHD-4 is a portable, compact leak detector that can run on its own battery for up to four hours. Weighing only 5.7 lb. (2.6 kg) including the battery, it can be taken anywhere. The PHD-4 can detect very small leaks in objects that have a slight helium/air pressure inside. It is sensitive to helium concentrations as small as 2 parts per million. That is equivalent to a leak rate of 5 x 10-6 atm-cc/sec which is far superior to the performance of other means of detecting leaks, such as bubble testing. To do this, it relies on Varian’s proprietary and patented SIPD (Selective Ion Pump Detection) technology. Controlled by a microprocessor and using a touch-screen for input and output, the PHD-4 is easy to use. No training is required. All tuning and zeroing are handled automatically. The display can be set to use any of four languages (English, French, German, and Italian). The basic PHD-4 package includes: a PHD-4 basic module; transformer/battery charger (115V-240V); carrying strap; 15-pin I/O connector; and an instruction manual on CD-ROM. The complete PHD-4 package includes everything in the basic package plus a spare battery; travel case; and a probe set. The PHD-4 replacement parts kit includes a sampling pump with fittings; probe with sampling line; probe tip filter; and an internal filter kit (5 units).
